Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis ( PGD) IVF?

Question by Jeannette C: Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis ( PGD) IVF?
Ok, my Chromesome test came back abnormal & my doctor suggested PGD? Can someone please explain what this is? Is it painful? My doctor gave me a medical explaination but it sounded like Jibberish to me. I’ve had 5 miscarriages.

OK. So with IVF, they harvest your eggs and your husband’s sperm, and combine them in a petri dish. Some of the eggs get fertilized, and start to divide into embryos. Normally, the clinic will evaluate which embryo or embryos are the healthiest, and place those into your uterus, where hopefully one or two implant and develop normally.

PGD is just another step in the process. They remove one cell from each developing embryo, and examine its DNA. They can screen for all major genetic diseases as well as sex.

They discard the embryos with abnormalities.

It’s not painful for you or the embryo. (An embryo can’t feel anything at that stage of development. And it will continue to develop normally, despite being missing a cell.)

You can check out the Science Museum of Minnesota’s “Science Buzz” website. www.smm.org/buzz Type “PGD” into the search bar. They’ve done a bunch of entries about the process.

I do not personally know, but my aunt had a round of that and it was very successful, her little boy is 5 now.
