How would you go about suing the NHS over IVF treatment?

Question by Edward H: How would you go about suing the NHS over IVF treatment?
My sister-in-law has breast cancer and was given the option of IVF treatment, which she’d have to pay for.

However, she was told by her GP that the treatment was going to be about two grand, whereas she was phoned by the bank today because the NHS tried to take five grand from her bank account – which was declined. When she phoned the clinic, they told her this was how much it was going to cost all along.

Any ideas as to what she should do?

Read the contract she signed and verify the costs. She may have heard it wrong.

It sounds like you need professional help, as what you say doesn’t quite add up. Contact one of the major cancer charity helplines and ask their advice . Many are listed on http://www.after-cancer.com/contacts.

You may have to try several as this is a complicated problem and not all helplines may have the expertise to help.

You may also find your Euro MEP (member of European Parliament) can help – if you look under http://www.acter-cancer.com/lymphoedema there is a case study of someone who got their MEP to help when NHS wouldn’t fund their treatment.

    Good luck.
