Question by Lea: how do I go through IVF without gaining weight?
I am already about 40 lbs overweight just from being on various fertility drugs over the past three years. I have heard from EVERYONE that IVF will put the weight on you but I do not want to gain anymore weight. I don’t really have time to lose any before I start it because i am 38 and need to get on with it. What are some tips that any of you would recommend to keep the weight gain to a minimum?

Our fertility clinic had a nutritionist on staff – she worked with me to develop the meal plans – lots of whole grains, minimal carbs, lean meats, fruit & veggies etc . . . I tried to also incorporate exercise – but the changes in diet really seemed to make the most difference for me.
I would see if you can meet with someone – they were also able to work with me throughout my pregnancy (I have IVF twins) to keep my weight gain within normal parameters making it easier to shed the pounds afterward.
Good luck and baby dust for your cycle!

You cannot unless you’re lucky. The fertility medications change the way your body stores weight. Some of it is water weight and will come off with time, usually about a month. But the rest is harder to get off. It is pretty common to put on between 5 and 20 pounds. I was a stick before IVF and always had a very hard time putting on weight. I put on 15 pounds in 4 IVF cycles. The medications will also increase your appetite. Just make certain that you are eating healthy foods. Try and get more fruits, vegetables, and healthy foods in. Keep your body moving, but make sure you are getting the rest you need. You’ll be tired! I do fertility yoga and walk daily while cycling and love it because it helps me to get moving and to de-stress. Don’t overdo it! Just try and get some gentle exercise when you have energy.
Worry about the weight after the 30lbs that you will hopefully be packing on soon
Good luck to you!
